James is a Melbourne based theatre and film maker. He began his career as a stage actor, singer and dancer in the UK and New Zealand. During his time his appearances included Turandot with the State Opera Company, Romeo & Juliet and Petruska with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, New Moon with The Michale Pamerton Dance Company, 42nd Street with Music Theatre Incorporated, and Cats C. Macintosh Productions. As a theatre producer James projects have appeared around the world including the Shanghai Performing Arts Festival in China, The New London Theatre in London, The Bahais Theatre in Amsterdam, and The Penang Performing Arts Centre in Malaysia. His Charles Dickens Project in 2013 toured one end of New Zealand to the other appearing at over twenty venues, before departing for an international tour. His 2017/19 productions of Medea proceed by The Women of Troy saw 25 female and gender diverse artists tour regionally performing in outdoor amphitheatres. James is currently in pre-production for his 2024 showing of Helen Dunlop’s play Mrs Bin. As a film maker James has produced, directed, and edited a large array of short films and documentaries including Pierre ce de Resistance (Wong. L, 2023), From Big Voice to No Voice (Achieu. D, 2023), The Worst Kind of Character (Cowan. G, 2023), Flaccid (Angel. T, 2022), Ormond and Verona (Baptie. F, 2022) and 2.15 AM (Nguyen. K, 2022). He is currently in production for new documentary collaboration with local actor and playwright Dawn Bamforth, and a screen adaptation of the life of Grace O’Malley with co-writer Emily Mae Jones.
